This August, join Heritage Museums & Gardens for a historic garden tour. Visit the Strawbery Banke Museum and two of the restored historic gardens featured in Heritage’s current exhibit, “Lost Gardens of New England”, currently on view in the History Museum.

We will begin our journey on Monday departing Heritage at 8:30am. Our first stop will be the Georgian-style Codman Estate, c. 1740, in Lincoln, MA. The grounds feature a hidden Italianate garden with perennial beds, statuary, and a reflecting pool filled with waterlillies as well as an English cottage garden. Following lunch at Concord’s Colonial Inn, we will continue on toward the Hamilton House, c. 1785, in South Berwick, ME. Situated on the Salmon Falls River, the gardens feature the elements of a Colonial revival landscape – symmetry, elevation changes, a fountain, statuary, sundials, and birdbaths, eight columns and twice that number of finials, as well as thirteen millstones set into the paths.

That afternoon we will check into the historic Sise Inn in the charming seaport of Portsmouth, NH. This 19th century Queen Anne residence is located within blocks of the waterfront. After a day of activities, spend the evening as you wish - stroll Portsmouth’s cobblestone streets, dine in one of the many fine restaurants or simply relax in the comfort of the fire-placed parlor at the inn.

Tuesday morning savor the delicious aromas of muffins and breads wafting through the charming breakfast room where a light breakfast buffet will be served. Fortified for another day of exploration, we will visit the Strawbery Banke Museum for a glimpse into garden history. The Museum preserves nearly four centuries of original gardens and was recently recognized by Garden Design Magazine as one of four sites in the world teaching about change over time in the landscape. These gardens bring new life to the ground where generations of immigrants helped to create the unfolding story of America. After a guided tour and time for independent discovery, we will board the bus for our return trip to the Cape making one stop to stretch our legs.
